Volume Two - Sri Lanka

This photo was taken for a post-tsunami recovery project based in Madampagama on the south west coast of Sri Lanka. The project is a joint effort between The Sustainable Trust in the UK and The Centre for Environment and Development in Sri Lanka. For more details on this project click here.

Children in Sri Lanka are treated as precious treasure and the pride taken in them is overwhelming. This is one of my favourite shots as it demonstrates this pride so well. What more can you say about this grandmother's face? But beyond that, the expression on this toddlers face is priceless; a kind of bizarre 'Winston Churchill' pride exudes from his youthful chubbiness. He is so serious for one so young! I love it. And the onlookers in the background are again reinforcing this heartfelt pride.
