Volume Two - Sri Lanka

This photo was taken for a post-tsunami recovery project based in Madampagama on the south west coast of Sri Lanka. The project is a joint effort between The Sustainable Trust in the UK and The Centre for Environment and Development in Sri Lanka. For more details on this project click here.

This was just a quick shot showing coconut husks drying before being split and processed into the next stage of coir. Before I had travelled to places like Sri Lanka or India I thought that the coconut just consisted of those brown dried up things you get in the supermarket. I also hadn't realised how important the coconut was to the economy of such countries, the prices even being tracked on the stock market as closely as oil in other countries.
