Volume Three - California and Alaska

Mavericks, in Half Moon Bay, is a wave that was pioneered by Geoff Clark who surfed it alone for 15 years. Hawaiian big wave surfer Mark Foo died surfing Mavericks and there is a monument dedicated to him as you approach the beach. It is one of those waves that most surfers would love to be able to ride but few are brave or skilful enough to do so. It breaks in deep water in front of the jagged rocks in this photo, and can reach up to 30 feet plus at times. We watched for awhile as one lone surfer battled against today’s relatively small 12 – 15ft waves.
