Volume Three - New Zealand

When we arrived in Doubtless Bay it was raining. We had expected to see crystal clear water and golden sparkling sands in relatively warm and dry weather. The landscape was beautiful but a little less easy to appreciate in cool wet weather, especially when you are camping. That night the rain got heavier and heavier. In the morning, whilst laying in the relative comfort of the tent, we decided that we would chase the better weather down south and vowed to make a move to do so, despite the less than enticing idea of packing up a wet tent. However, things got worse. On attempting to put our boots on, left in the dry porch area of our tent, we discovered that an entire colony of ants had decided that our boots would make an excellent and dry alternative to the wet outside. Our boots were now inhabited by hundreds of ant eggs and covered with about the same amount of ants going about their business. The tent was likewise covered. Packing up was less than fun and it was days before we were able to dry out and fully clear the ants from the tent. For days we felt like the very debris that was strewn across this Doubtless Bay beach. We were however lucky compared to some as widespread floods had hit the entire area and we came across many landslides on our journey south, seeking the drier weather that continued to elude us for a few more days.
