He was sat beside me but his mind was sweeping down the breaking wave that rolled towards us. He was feeling the wave, shifting his balance, reading its journey, respecting its power; a ‘back-seat surfer’ twitching and jerking his way to the shore wishing he were ‘driving’. He studied a few more then picked up his board and pushed out to meet them face-to-face. I sat watching him, a ‘back-seat’ passenger on his journey down the waves, my body now bending and twitching with his every move.
