The midday sun had driven me to find cool shade and refreshment amongst the narrow arches and alleyways of this ancient city. My steps grew heavy, slowed down by the heat, but eventually I found cool sandy walls to touch and cooler air to drink in. The dog only slightly raised its head as I turned the corner. It was conserving its energy for moving down a few more steps to escape the stark light of the chasing sun.
